Even a happy life cannot be without a measure of darkness, and the word ‘happy’ would lose its meaning if it were not balanced by sadness. Of course, it is understandable that we seek happiness and avoid disagreeable chances, despite the fact that reason teaches us that such an attitude is not reasonable because it defeats its own ends - the more you deliberately seek happiness the more sure you are not to find it. It is therefore far better to take things as they come along, with patience and equanimity.

The name of this site was originally Along the 'Bu, as most of my life these days is spent living and driving along the 27 miles of winding coastline of Malibu, California. I decided to expand on the name to include "H.a.p.p.y." because what I write here represents so much more than where I live, but rather how I live, and how I attempt to balance it all, while seeking the "happy" of it all along the way.

Despite what is commonly believed, happiness is not a given, an entitlement, or an absolute. I believe being happy, or rather finding the elusive state of "happiness" that we all are constantly seeking, is just a matter of perspective.

For me, H.A.P.P.Y. is:  Hope. Awareness. Positivity. Perseverance. Yoga.

Hope is a powerful concept, and the anchor has been the ancient symbol of hope for centuries. Made of a solid body, the anchor is often a seaman’s last resort in a storm, and is identified with firmness, solidity, and tranquility. As it remains firm and steady amidst stormy waters, the anchor can also symbolize the stable part of a human being - that quality which enables us to maintain a clear mind amidst the confusion, sensations and emotions experienced during stress. Hope has the power to get us through those figurative storms of life that we all inevitably will encounter.

Awareness is essential in order to be an emotionally fit and intelligent being; and yet, it is not inherent in us. We must instead cultivate it through mindfulness and a willingness to be vulnerable if we are to fully connect with others or effect any real change for the better, both within us and around us.

Positivity is a priceless commodity; and unfortunately, not a natural mind set for most. I too must remind myself to be positive at times; and I often fail, especially when things are at their most chaotic. I find a positive attitude to be transformative - it changes everything - and I aspire to have one every day.

Perseverance is indispensable when the road gets rough. Life does not always come easy, and success in any pursuit is not automatic. Determination and persistence is the key to enjoying life's journey and keeping peace of mind amidst the turmoil and challenges you will evidently face.

Yoga is the glue that keeps it all together. Truly. Although the literal definition of yoga is "union," its meaning and significance changes for those with varying philosophies and beliefs. It also means "to yoke," as in yoking or harnessing the mind, body and soul into perfect balance and harmony... cultivating equanimity within. In my experience, yoga encapsulates what human wellness is.

All human unhappiness comes from not facing reality squarely, exactly as it is.
